When we moved into our home, our upstairs hallway always felt so dreary to me. It’s also the first thing you see when you open our front door. I knew that it needed an update, but wanted to create a space that was bright and easy to accomplish.
All this project took to turn this gloomy hallway into a bright and airy space was some shiplap wallpaper, a new light fixture, a new runner, and black door knobs – and all for under $300!
BEFORE
Notice the yellow/beige paint color and the old light? Had to go!
I started by cleaning the walls and prepping them for the new wallpaper. Shiplap wallpaper is tricky because you have to make sure all of the lines match up perfectly…even those spots above the door frames (and there were 5 door frames in this hallway)! I also had to take note that since this is an old Cape, the ceiling were most likely not going to be perfectly straight.
I measured and cut each paper prior to hanging. The wallpaper I chose was this peel & stick shiplap wallpaper from Target. I’m kind of indifferent between peel & stick vs. adhesive wallpaper because they both have their pros and cons. Peel & Stick leaves no mess behind, but you have to physically take off and re-stick if you need to realign. Adhesive wallpaper is much easier to move around on the wall to line up, but pretty messy and you cannot adjust it once it is dry.
It took me about 4 hours to hang the wallpaper in this hallway because of all the cuts I had to make, but it turned out even better than I had hoped!
